How Do Wong Teasers Work?

Wong Teasers are one of the most popular ways to bet on the NFL. But what exactly are online sports betting Wong Teasers? And how can you use a Wong Teaser strategy to get the most bang for your buck?

Today, in our guide to Wong Teasers, we’re going to look at the following:

  • What are Wong Teasers?
  • A real-world example of a Wong Teaser
  • Are Wong Teasers the right type of bet for you?

Let’s get down to business!

What Are Wong Teasers?

In essence, a Wong Teaser is a specific type of parlay bet  and one of the most popular “teasers” in the USA.

Used exclusively in the NFL, Wong Teasers are centered on two “key numbers”, 3 and 7. You must tease through these numbers in order to win.

To understand Wong Teasers properly, you must first understand what we mean when we talk about key numbers, teasers and “covering the spread.”

With that in mind, let’s take a better look at all these things and how they play a part in the Wong Teasers betting strategy.

Key Numbers Explained

Key numbers are an essential part of sports betting, especially if you’re interested in “point spread betting”, which is concerned with the amount of points between the favorites and the underdogs.

Therefore, key numbers are important figures that pop up across various different sports, and they can help you when you make point spread and parlay bets.

For instance, the key numbers in the NFL are 3 and 7. This is because points are scored in threes for field goals and sevens for converted touchdowns. Therefore, multiples of 3 and 7 are the most common final scores, making them the most important numbers in the NFL.

Teaser Bets Explained

Simply put, a teaser bet is when the bettor buys points from the spread at a casino or online sports betting site and creates a parlay bet with two or more teams.

When you buy points from the spread, you’re getting an advantage. So the way that the bookmaker counters this edge is by making you bet on both the favorite and the underdog within the same match, and/or multiple teams in a competition.

Overall, teaser bets supply more action and incentivize betting on the underdogs as well as the favorites. This makes even the slowest of sports events hugely exciting, and teaser bets are some of the most popular wagers across the entire United States.

“Cover the Spread” Explained

There is a favorite and an underdog in all sports matches. And the “point spread” refers to the amount of points the favorite is expected to win by.

Bookmakers set the point spread  after the matchup is announced. To win a point spread bet, the favorite must win by more than the point spread set out by the bookies. This means you have “covered the spread” and won your bet.

The Wong Teaser Bet

Named after Stanford Wong , the American gambling author, the Wong Teaser is an NFL 6-point teaser with odds on the favorites of -7.5 to -8.5 and the underdogs of +1.5 and +2.5 in American odds.

Most NFL games are decided by 3 or 7 points. Therefore, Wong deduced that, if you could tease between these two numbers, you could have  a far higher chance of winning.

It turns out he was right!

In fact, Wong Teasers have changed the way we gamble on sports. Nowadays, Wong Teasers are thought of as the basic strategy for all NFL teaser betting.

An Example of a Wong Teaser

To understand this type of bet perfectly, let’s a look at an example of a typical 3-team, 6-point Wong Teaser:

  • Pittsburgh Steelers +2.5
  • New York Giants +1.5
  • Jacksonville Jaguars -8

Add your 6-point teaser bet and get the following odds:

  • Steelers +8.5
  • Giants +7.5
  • Jaguars -2

Wong Teasers effectively give you better odds, as you buy points to improve your chances of winning.

However, all your bets must come in if you’re to win, which levels the playing field a little more. It also closes the margin between you and the bookmaker again.

Are Wong Teasers the Right Type of Bet for You?

We’re constantly asked, are Wong Teasers profitable? And the answer is: most of the time.

Generally speaking, Wong Teasers odds are better than those in many other sports betting markets. However, the edge that you gain from buying points off the spread is countered by the fact that you have to bet on multiple teams, meaning you have more chance of a losing leg.

Like everything in sports betting, nothing is ever guaranteed. But Wong Teasers are a great type of bet for NFL fans that can, at the very least, inject some fun into proceedings and, at their very best, bring you in a serious win.
